Frozen Shoulder

What is Frozen Shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is a condition characterised by stiffness, pain and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. It typically develops over time and can be severely debilitating.

Risk factors

The exact causes of frozen shoulder are unclear but it can occur after prolonged immobility (such is the case post-surgery) or be associated with metabolic conditions including diabetes and thyroid conditions.

Symptoms of frozen shoulder include:

  • Pain

  • Limited range of motion

  • Stiffness

Treatment options

Frozen shoulder can take a long time to recover and guided rehabilitation by a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist has been shown to assist in improving pain and function within the arm.
